2008 CONFRONTING CONCERNS

Overview | Project Goals | Resources | Accomplishments| Affiliates

Overview

In an effort to inspire greater leadership of youth in the project, Confronting Concerns in 2008 initiated a new program titled the Confronting Concerns III Leadership Institute. The institute focused on training youth leaders in facilitation and workshop development so that they would move into roles as workshop facilitators for other youth. (and adults)  It was believed that because young leaders Pwould be spending more time learning about and growing their own leadership skills, they would be better able to design programs that would truly engage other youth.

The program commitment extended from January – August, 2008 and included 5 leadership training workshops and 4 youth-facilitated workshops for adults and youth in the NY City community. Youth leaders certainly benefited from leadership training, and learned more skills in building and facilitating workshops.

Project Goals

Project goals included:

  1. Youth Leaders learned specific skills that enabled them to build and facilitate their own workshops, speak confidently in front of groups of youth and adults and engage other youth in taking actions to improve the issues identified.
  2. Workshops for youth were theme based and experiential, enabling the youth to learn from one another and created a safe space where everyone feels they can share their ideas.
  3. Workshops were action-based and encouraged youth in attendance to take actions that would make a positive change in the community around the issues.
  4. The experiences of youth in the workshop were documented through evaluations so the Youth Leaders and adults could work to improve the workshops.
  5. The youth learned collaboration, communication, listening skills and were able to cross ethnic boundaries and learned to respect the cultures of other groups of people.

The youth in Leadership Institute learned the following skills:
---Organizations skills in creating an agenda and carrying out a workshop
---Ability to work together as a group on a project
---Self reflection and sensitively to co-workers on a project
---Increased ability to deal with conflict as it arose in the group process
