Confronting Concerns III
In an effort to inspire greater leadership of youth in the project, Confronting Concerns is initiating a new program – the Confronting Concerns III Leadership Institute. The institute will focus on training youth leaders in facilitation and workshop development so that they will move into roles as workshop facilitators for other youth. Because young leaders will be spending more time learning about and growing their own leadership skills, they will be better able to design programs that will truly engage other youth.
The program commitment extends from January – August, and will include 5 leadership training workshops and 4 youth-facilitated workshops for adults and youth in the NY City community. Youth leaders will benefit from leadership training, learning how to build and facilitate workshops and will receive a stipend for their work.
Project Goals
- Youth Leaders will be a group of diverse youth, including Harlem youth of different genders, ethnic background and ages.
- Youth Leaders will learn specific skills that will enable them to build and facilitate their own workshops, speak confidently in front of groups of youth and adults and engage other youth in taking actions to improve the issues identified.
- Workshops for youth will be theme based and experiential, enabling the youth to learn from one another and create a safe space where everyone feels they can share their ideas.
- Workshops will also be action-based and will encourage youth in attendance to take actions that will make a positive change in the community around this issue.
- The experiences of youth in the workshop will be documented through evaluations so the Youth Leaders and NPD leadership can work to improve the workshops.
- Youth Leaders will produce one (or several) documents that chart the work they have done on each of the issues.
- Youth Leaders will feel as though they have made a positive impact on their community.
