Meeting Notes

In Week 4, we began to shift from facilitation and leadership training to a more of a focus on planning for our upcoming workshops. We started out by reviewing a brief newsletter that had been created by Sister Kathleen and meeting Fernanda, a student at Marymount College that would be helping us with publicizing our project. Very quickly we were able to jump into a discussion about an issue that had been affecting the group, and that was the relationship between group members. We spoke at length about the importance of working with others even though you may not agree with them all the time or you have a different perspective on an issue. This discussion brought up a lot about our group dynamics, and it was a great point for us to look inward and see how we might have been contributing to some of the issues affecting the group.

After that discussion, we spent sometime brainstorming what a workshop is and sharing examples of both positive and negative workshop experiences we had in the past. Many people pointed out that a workshop should be fun and engaging and should have a topic that was relevant. We also identified the importance of having workshop spaces be safe spaces so all participants knew they could share their ideas and not feel intimidated. We also brought up that having factual information to share with participants was important. We got a solid understanding of workshops and were able to identify some of the strategies we would like to use in our own workshops.
